Solaris Express uses GRUB, the same bootloader as most Linux distros, so if you
know how to dual boot Linux, you know how to dual boot Solaris.

As far as I know you'd be using the same camera and scanner software in Solaris
as Linux and BSD. For scanners it's (X)SANE, but I'm not sure about cameras. I
can't imagine Solaris being a better "lot of general tasks without playing
around" OS than most popular Linux distros, but your results may vary.
