Sorry to jump in late into this conversation... The one thing I absolutely abhor about Linux is the proliferation of distros that are almost compatible. I have commercial software on Linux and what I've learned by painful experience is that I need to make builds on each distro (and sometimes OS version) that is requested, otherwise I get unpleasantly surprised at changes in behaviour.
When OpenSolaris became available, I had high hopes that it wouldn't splinter into such a disarray. Having a Linux vs. Solaris compatible distinction is bad enough, I just hope it doesn't fragment into a <name your favorite Linux distro> compatibility. My 2 cents.
