you can install  gnome, kde or any one of at least a 1/2 dozen other
window managers. ( www.blastwave.org) And still run any of the
solaris/solaris express versions.

blastwave.org has over 1000 packages... no match for what linux/gentoo
offers. But still enough to get started.
