That feature was added in a Solaris 9 update release. We don't do ftp or http but instead do https, both for the inital install image boot and all the pkgadds. Search for WAN boot on docs.sun.com. Unfortunately this is SPARC only just now and depends on OBP support for the security of the initial kernel image.
