Hi,
It depends on what your desktop activities are, and which "open solaris" distribution you choose to run. Open Solaris for now is not a distribution, you will choose one of Solaris Express, Schillix, Belenix or Nexenta. Each distribution comes with its own set of userland tools.
Take Solaris Express for example, it comes with StarOffice 7 which is based on OpenOffice.org to provide you daily office capability and M$ Office document compatibility to a certain degree. In the latest build, I heard RealPlayer is also integrated in. Unfortunately you won't have Acrobat Reader for pdf viewing, though there is xpdf (not perfect.) For web surfing, Sun Beijing team contributes Firefox/Thunderbird build.
It makes an "almost there" desktop I would say. (power management like standby and hibernation is not supported though.) Your hardware configuration looks ok, however, knowing model of your ASUS M/B will make people reading this list more capable to determing if it works.
HTH,
Ivan.
