Nexenta is a good desktop distro if you're familiar with Ubuntu or Debian. There's also Solaris Express, but it isn't pure OpenSolaris. Nvidia's driver should work for your GF 4MX, so you can have 3D support. Otherwise I'm going to guess you have an nForce 2 chipset, which ought to be supported, except possibly for the NIC. I know even Linux and the BSDs have trouble with some nForce NICs.
As for software, you'll have to tell us what you need. I had to compile mplayer myself with a few patches, avoiding the latest version to get support equivalent to my Linux machine. The Nexenta package doesn't properly support all win32 codecs. Other apps like Firefox, Evolution, and Gaim just work.
