A number of engineers on the Data Management Group are working on a port of
Solaris to the zSeries mainframe servers and we'd like to establish a community
supporting and promoting a port. The initial efforts of this port would allow
the Solaris operating system to execute as a guest on a zSeries Virtual Machine
facility and the Hercules mainframe emulator,
http://www.conmicro.cx/hercules/. If there was sufficient justification for the
effort the port would then address running Solaris in a native partition.

Through this community we'd build a network of developers focused on effecting
this port.

We see this port as an opportunity to make Solaris the Internet interface to
the large stores of mainframe centric data frequently being accessed by Linux
today. We feel that Solaris has a number of attributes that will provide
significant benefits over the Linux mainframe implementation.

From prior posts on the general discussion list there is an interest within the
community for porting Solaris to the mainframe. It is expected that the level
of participation will be somewhat focused to as limited group of developers due
to lack of publicly available facilities on which to develop the port.
However, the Hercules emulator will allow anyone with an interest to
participate.

Thoughts, suggestions, and questions are welcome.

Having Solaris on zSeries will be a nice complement to Polaris which
targets IBM pSeries among other platforms, leaving IBM no options
but one - to embrace Solaris across all the product range:)

OpenSolaris WD Edition :)
