I don't know how it works; but I do know that you can certainly startup
the programs and then talk to them with AppleScript. For example
startup iPhoto, select the pictures in this named album and give me the
list of all the underlying images files that implement it. I don't know
if that would need the iPhoto GUI to come up or not I think it depends
on the individual components, the processes certainly need to run.
