OK, so this isn't one of the "Analog Devices"  AC'97 codecs.
The vendor id 0x4358 translates to "Conexant", according to
Linux alsa 1.0.10 sources.

I found an old mail (August 2005) where someone with an 
Acer TravelMate2300 laptop had the same problem.
That laptop used the Intel ICH4 audio controller and also had
the 0x43585430 Conexant AC'97 codec.  The Sun audio driver
didn't produce sound, but my i810 audio driver fixed the problem.

But that shouldn't matter.  I've added some code to report the AC'97 features,
but my i810 driver doesn't change behaviour because the codec announces that
its AUX channel is a "headphone out" channel.

When using Sun's i810 audio driver, did you check in "sdtaudiocontrol" that all
output channels are enabled, a reasonable volume is set and sound output is 
unmuted?
