[Apologize for the late clarification. We are aware of this thread only very recently.]
There seems a lot of confusing around the Clearview project and the /dev/net namespace it will introduce. As a team member of the Clearview project, I'd like to make some clarification: * A major component of the Clearview project is to provide administrators the ability to (re)name network interfaces. Currently, the names of network interfaces are tied to the underlying hardware, for example, bge0. In the future, administrators will be able to give the network interfaces meaningful names as they like (e.g., gateway0). This will also ease the effort of machine migration, Zones migration or dynamic reconfiguration. /dev/net will be the namespace to keep all the vanity-named nodes (for example, /dev/net/gateway0). Note that if administrator choose not to use the network interface vanity naming feature, the network interfaces will still have the same names people are used to for years (e.g., bge0). There will be *no* device names like /dev/net/192.168.1.0. * Another component of the Clearview project is "IP-Level Observability Devices" - which introduces a /dev/ipnet namespace which contains DLPI style-1 devices for each IP interface on the system. The /dev/ipnet devices can be used to observe local IP traffic, including traffic on 127.0.0.1 as well as traffic between zones. Again, the /dev/ipnet devices will have the same names of the interface names, for example, /dev/ipnet/lo0 and /dev/ipnet/bge0. I hope this gives you a better idea of the Clearview project. If people like to know about more on Clearview, more information can be found on Clearview OpenSolaris project site: http://opensolaris.org/os/project/clearview/, and if people have more suggestions on the specifics of Clearview, please provide your input on OpenSolaris networking discussion forum: http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=3. We are glad to address any concerns you may have. For this thread, let's focus on the devname proposal.
