The factual information presented in the two posts (partially quoted
above) is untrue.
First of all, Philips Webcam driver development continues to date. The
latest version(s) of the Linux pwc drivers (supporting kernels 2.4.x
and 2.6.x) can be downloaded from:
http://www.saillard.org/linux/pwc/
I'm very well aware of this. It's great that it exists, and yes I do use
it as well. But there's a moral issue here: Luc Saillard has reverse
engineered the closed-source (Philips NDA) compressor part of the driver.
As Nemosoft says in his (biased, of course) article, that and/or directly
releasing his source for it might or might not have been legally ok. But
doing so definitely betrays the trust of the people at Philips that
originally issued the NDA for that piece.
"Tainted" ? Yes, the approach is.
