How sad am I responding to my own post! Anyhoo, I've edited the shadow file so
the root password is blank by rebooting into single user (failsafe) mode and
simply writing a single line for root to the shadow file (I don't know how to
use vi and frankly, don't want to know). I'm still not able to login as root!
If anyone has any bright ideas for getting this one moving please get in touch.
