Did you change dclarke's UID between (2) and (3) by any chance?
Anyway, it looks like you've got stale gconf and/or ORBit files in
/var/tmp.  Best thing to do is:

1) make sure you kill all gconfd-2 processes
2) log in as root on the console and rm -rf /var/tmp/*-dclarke
