I can vouch for this.  I am the epitome of a newbie; I haven't really
coded any C since college over a decade ago.  I started out this way and
have about half a dozen putbacks so far.

i'm not saying that the current method does not work, in fact i'm
impressed by how many contributions opensolaris has had the last year,
the code is new to many and yet we had over 100 contributions. I just
think we could work on a more friendly welcome than the current "here
are the build instructions, here is the coding standard an the devel
guide, here are the oss_bits, now you're on your own".
maybe we could collect the experience of those that have already
contributed code and write something down, how did they find out about
the bug, the context of the bug, how the code/subsystem that contained
the bug should work, what does the fix actually do and mix some code
there. Just a thought
anyway, i went very off topic, sorry about that :)
