If you install third-party print daemons such as CUPS, then I think you need to make sure at least that you have the third party versions of the "lp", "lpr", "lpq" and similar commands in your path before the ones in /usr/bin. Read the READMEs. There are also some programs out there (hello, dtmail? if I remember right) that hard-code the /usr/bin path, which can mess up printing).
