Encouraged by an online article showing how Solaris outperformed Linux for the
Asterisk PBX, I've convinced the owner of a local startup that builds a PBX
appliance (Via chipset) to use OpenSolaris.

Of course that meant I would have to help set up a development system for him.
This wasn't for the weak hearted. The targeted box has
keyboard/mouse/video/ethernet as well as USB ports, but no bootable peripheral.
I tried a USB DVD drive, but no go. I ended up popping the case and putting a
DVD drive on the IDE bus. Installation went fine, but I couldn't convince the
video driver to do less anything but 1600x1200. This meant lugging my old 20"
multisync CRT instead of using an LCD for the rest of the setup. I did finally
manage to coax an acceptable resolution by specifying that it was a VESA
compatible device to Xorg.

Next problem was that the ethernet device wasn't working. I downloaded the vfe
driver code and got that resolved. The rest of the setup went like a dream. It
took most of a day, but he left impressed. Once he's ready I'm going to help
setup the real machine that he just can clone from.

If his business takes off, it will be a real feather in the community's hat.
Thanks to everyone for making this possible.
