Why? The source code is free to the public. Should Sun go buh-bye tomorrow, the code would still remain free and life would go on. > Sun Solaris is Sun's distribution of OpenSolaris. > Period. OK, so where's the difference? Sun Solaris is Sun's distribution of OpenSolaris. OK. So if B is based on A, but not quite A, however most of it is made out of A, you could argue that B is not A, but however is A for all practical purposes, although not intents... or was that too complicated? (;-) Current Solaris is based on OpenSolaris. That's the bottom line. There is no more Solaris as we knew it. It's *ALL* OpenSolaris now. At least that's what you've been telling us for the past year and a half. Or trying to tell us. > And what you are saying is hurting OpenSolaris. I do not believe that for a second, and neither should you. It is one thing to try and get visibility, but totally another to go to the *extreme* and try to separate "Sun's distribution of OpenSolaris", as you put it, and OpenSolaris. > Right, which is my attempt to break up this belief > that OpenSolaris is > Solaris. OK. Solaris is OpenSolaris. Better? You say potato, I say potato, you say tomato, I say tomato... > Because people continue to say things like > "OpenSolaris is Solaris" I corrected it. See above. > Well, I don't know how to put it any other way... you > may believe you > are being practical about it; but you're wrong. > You're confusing the > ser by overly-simplifying things. > > If you equate Linux==Red Hat, and OpenSolaris==Sun > Solaris, why not just > go a step further and equate Operating > Systems==Windows? Operating Systems is plural, and Windows is singular. So that is not logical nor practical. As far as "Linux == RedHat", there are principally two choices: one could waste one's time with other Linux distros (of which there are million), or one could simply learn ReadHat Enterprise Server, get certified, start raking in the cash, and plough on. At the end of the day, debating whether or not RedHat is the only Linux in town won't bring bread on the table, but performing the above described action will. And one will also take the sanest possible approach to learning Linux.
