I really appreciate your suggestions.

However, I have spent weeks working on Samba 3 and Microsoft Active Directory, 
and I am not alone in deciding that Samba 3 is just not up to acting as an AD 
replacement. The issues are not just on the server side, but also the client, 
and Microsoft has tied Windows XP very tightly to AD. Therefore any AD 
replacement must cover a lot of bases. (And I hate to think what is going to 
happen once Vista-based notebooks start appearing for connection to the LAN).

It is now close to 3 years since the agreement between Sun and Microsoft and I 
thought something tangible may now be available to provide a Sun solution for 
replacing AD.
