Actually, since Solaris is intended to eventually compete directly with Windows
at some point in the (not so distant, distant) future, there is very much a
need for Solaris to have a modern, Windows-like desktop environment.

I might always prefer CLI, but end-users / consumers just want "clicky-bunty"
colorful, pretty little pictures to click on.

Linux way is not good for Solaris, and will most likely never be good for
Solaris.
Besides, Solaris has JumpStart(TM), which blows Anaconda out of the water on
any given day of the week, and has a small memory footprint. Granted, it's that
much more complex than Anaconda, but it's extremely powerful.

I don't think you're aware of the fact that you *need* Solaris's `fdisk` to
*partition* the disk(s) and *need* Solaris's `format` to *slice* that partition
up and write a VTOC label inside it. There's no way around that, and no other
partitioning tool knows about any of those things.

Thank IBM and their braindead BIOS from 1981, which knows nothing about Sun or
EFI disk labels and can only handle four primary partitions for that.

Why do you think Itanium based systems have an EFI shell instead of a BIOS?

JDS is the Sun's version of GNOME with corresponding enhancements and themes.
That's how GNOME was meant to work in the first place -- and there is nothing
wrong with anybody, including Sun, customizing GNOME.

CDE is an old technology with no future. It was cutting edge in its heyday, but
extreme complexity of its configuration and years of neglect of further
development have taken their toll.

BTW, if you want GNOME to be as fast or faster on Solaris as it is on Linux,
then lobby the GNOME developers to use Solaris as their primary development
platform. That will solve a good deal of the slowness and the performance
problems.

It's way too expensive to sink money into improving CDE.

Besides, if you're running Solaris on your computer, your computer is plenty
fast enough -- just ditch the GUI crap and use CLI.
Then will you truly learn what speed is.
