I hope you're talkin' 'bout the OpenSolaris Installer,... :

actually what was wrong with CDE then and now ? really nuthin'
comon' people its just an effin X-windows do-all, call it what you will.
I always liked it (CDE).
anyway , as mentioned already in this thread, unfortunatley its owned by a
bunch of compbabies (err companies), and therefore its not true Opensource, and
that is what is hindering it. heck, it's nowalmost dead because of that.
(Hence, why OpenSolaris needs to breath free Air with a BSD-like License- but
your right - thats another story)
Anyway, as someone else mentioned, you can still choose it (CDE) if you like,
and thats ok too.
its thats same old adage that's still true, and I quote, "...You can have
(1)Complete Automation (albeit degraded performance), or
(2)Security(even more degraded performance)
but you can only pick one of them ?!
-if you pick neither, you end up with Windows (still good for PC Games though ;)

However, a good 'ole console CLI has never let anybody down. you can trust in
that literally (or atleast have a better chance tool-wise of knowing whats
goin' on at the lower levels) -but that's the sysadmin in me speaking.

a fairly fast console, and prettier is webstart, nfsstart, even better "flash"
your images, ... and the best is Soalris Jumpstart, its (very)
quick(automation-tools-wise), even if it is just your one machine, and easy.
I honestly haven't really sought out the PXE stuff reagrding all the 'x86
scrap, but I hope the OpenSolaris Dev's are cookin' away at that too.

 good luck.

Rick.
