The documentation clearly states that a patch must never deliver new functionality.

What documentation is that?   It's clearly buggy.

And I quote:

Perhaps the documentation is buggy as you say; although it makes sense, at least to me, that a patch should *repair* and not *deliver new functionality*. Perhaps I misunderstood the above.

Either way, I'd really appreciate if you could clarify this, and I'm quite confident that the community at large would benefit from the clarification of the above as well.
