We really want our home directories today to always be /home/<user> in /etc/passwd; that way things Just Work (TM) when we move from host to host. This does mean that we need another map to convert from /home/barts to wherever my home directory actually is... OR we
So some dynamic map then that changes based on who is doing the mounting ? We have that already use an executable map.
I think however the real problem is actually that in the case of running from plain files or the case of the NFS server itself having automount manage /home is more trouble than it is worth - but thats how we always did it :-) It confuses to many people that you can't mkdir /home/user.
Alternatively maybe automount keeps managing /home but for the files case (at least) it translates mkdir <user> into zfs create rootpool/home/<user> && update /etc/auto_home ;-) but why bother with automounter looking after /home in the pure local files case anyway.
