See my other post for a proposal to bring us into a more modern era - basically turn off /home as an automount point when only using local files for nsswitch.conf's automount database.

The problem I see with this is that it makes it more difficult to
transition between the two configuration models - If I start out with
a non-NFS'd install, but then wish to convert to a NFS'd environment,
this path leaves me in a lurch.

Leaving the local home dirs in /export/home with a localhost entry in
the auto_home map means that I can still change the configuration of
the system in the future without having to move file systems around.

It also means that there is only one installation scheme to document.
