I am pretty sure you know that Xfce was supposed to be CDE, in a modernised version and form ?! KDE is IMHHO ugly, aside from the licensing. GNOME is bloat, and technically a rather ugly patchwork. Personally, I am quite happy with Xfce; it suits well to call individual Gnome applications. It is also quite lightweight, and still a full desktop. Commit to it, throw some effort at it, get proper artwork into it, and you have a great new 'CDE' desktop. Not to be forgotten: give it a proper default. Whenever I show it around, in its default version it looks like a pile of crap, with that ugly, almost useless 4-item-panel at the bottom. Integrate the Gnome applications, with drawers, add a 'mount' drawer, and off it goes.
