That said, it is important to provide detailed package information. I don't know if a system is in place to provide a "details" section like you see in Synaptic ( http://people.ubuntulinux.org/~mako/docteam/images/synaptic-start.png ), but there should be. PS: Ubuntu has the user experience right with "Add/Remove Programs" and "Synaptic". The full powerful tool is provided for use in an advanced-user menu. The simpler tool is provided in a common-user menu, providing a subset of features in an easy to use package that will be sufficient for most people.
