In principle, we do not create functions inside the kernel which
are named the same but behave radically different.

I'm not quite sure what the status is of these functions wrt. the
DDI/DDK interfaces.  If they are not part of the DDI/DDK, then they
should be and they will need to be documented as such.

These functions are generally declared in <sys/systm.h> which does not,
I think, appear in the list of standard headers to be included by
modules.
