Sorry, I was unfairly comparing Solaris RAID-Z with Linux RAID-5 at the start. You are absolutely right that both Solaris and Linux can both grow software RAID-5 arrays. (Windows cannot, and I see no indication otherwise) Back to the main point though: Solaris is (apparently) unable to grow RAID-Z arrays.
