oss ich driver + /usr/dt/bin/sdtaudio or gnome-sound-record works for 
me. And sdtaudio produces
better quality. You can try it by yourself.

Here is the trick. The audio applications you used is on SADA interface, 
one that different from OSS
interface. But OSS does provide a simulation of SADA interface, which 
means you have to set both
ossxmier and gnome-volume-control correctly. If you are using a mic, 
make sure mic is checked in
both ossxmixer and gnome-volume-control, and the one in the later is not 
crossed/muted.
And play some samples and make sure the playback works well.
