Would installing trutype

Thanks to the inclusion of StarOffice8 in Solaris, we actually have some of the
most popular TrueType fonts such as Times New Roman, Arial, etc. If you
prefer serif type fonts, I suggest you replace the default "times" fonts with
"Times New Roman" in Firefox font preferences.

Look and feel involves certain extent of subjectiveness. Those who just
migrate from the Windows or Mac environment may initially have an uneasy time
of getting used to the look and feel of Solaris. But the reverse is also true.
 I can't stand Windows anymore.

In addition to aesthetics, good screen fonts should also provide the function
of quicker apprehension and less strains to the eyes. I used to import Chinese
fonts from Windows, but now I think the Chinese fonts used in Solaris are the
easiest to the eyes. To me, this is the overriding factor. As shown in a
comparison of TrueType (Windows) vs FreeType (Solaris, SuSE 10.1):

the FreeType fonts look a little fatter (as in MacOS), and are easier to the
eyes (YMMV).

Earlier this year, the FreeType maintainer(s) decided not to compile sub-pixel
hinting into freetype fonts. This caused Solaris fonts to look unpleasant.
However, as I mentioned in a separate thread, this problem was caught by
Solaris developers and has been long solved.
