Solaris provides a documented and generally stable in-kernel ABI, the
"DDI", to permit 3rd party device drivers not part of the OS
distribution to be developed and distributed independently in binary
form.
While they execute within the kernel address space, solaris drivers
written to the DDI can be thought of (from an engineering standpoint, at
least), as independent programs.
