And I rarely ever see it used correctly. For example, why is it that most check to see if you're using the gnu fortran compiler when there isn't a lick of fortran code in the package. And many of them assume that you will always use gcc or g++ and hard-code some gnu-only options. It also typically hides a lot of stuff behind black boxes, like libtool. When things go wrong, it becomes a real nightmare to figure out why.
