It is called "makefiles" and it started in spring 1993 with the first
Solaris x86 release. Older release work without autoconf, since ~ 10 years
it includes autoconf.

If star is included in Solaris, there will be /usr/include/schily/* with all the
abstraction definitions needed for portability.
