I do not like to have /usr/gnu in front of my PATH if that causes GNU variants
of programs to overlay the UNIX versions.
There are many reasons for this, but let me give one that might not be well
known:
The fact that GNU tools extensively document non-POSIX options, pople tend to
write non-portable scripts as a result.
More GNU tools on Solaris could harm Solaris in case that the documentation
would not be enhanced to mark all non-standard extensions as such.
