Thank you for the hint. I "googled" about this topic and found a
relatively simple guide to switch from cde-login to gdm. It can
be found on a Sun page:

Furthermore the step to change from cde-login to gdm was just at
the right time. CDE commonly caused problems when shutting down
(init 5, I always use the init commands). cde-login has been 
transitioned to maintanance more than often. After every new
start the problems were gone, as if it would be healing itself.
But the last login went completely wrong and I even could not
logout anymore. 

Thanks to putty from which I could issue the essential commands:

# svcadm disable cde-login
# svcadm enable gdm

my Solaris display manager is powered by GNOME.
