I have issued the commands over putty because the desktop were locked in a way that the GNOME splash screen has overlayed the desktop background and I was not able to see any window but the menu bar and its menu. By the way the above said has also happened now with gdm once. So this is not unique to cde-login (dtlogin) as I thought first. Maybe this happened elsewhere too, and it is a bug anyway dormant ...
