No, not at all, the installer doesn't care about missing devices as
long there are sufficient I/O devices to install with:

        - disk
        - install media
        - console (either graphics, or text with working keyboard)

Hanging when configuring devices is generally cause by an issue with
one particular device or driver (such as a stuck shared interrupt).

Note that if Indiana boots but Solaris 09/07 does not, that the former
has much more recent bits and loading the latest SXCE may resolve your 
issues just as well.
