Back then, Sun didn't "change". What was done is that Sun synced up with AT&T's code. Again. After all, AT&T's System V release 3 was the authoritative source of UNIX. So much so, that all the important BSD / Bill Joy's changes made it into SVR4, and not the other way around. Similarly, HP-UX and IRIX didn't go to System V for no reason. IRIX even went from being BSD to System V. There was a big fat reason why all the three major vendors went *back* to System V. So the situation is not the same, and neither is the scenario.
