Did you run it with a device name? Without a device name -- as you're
quoting above -- it exits with an error, and produces output that
looks like this:

2008/03/04 07:58:13EST: Usage:
2008/03/04 07:58:13EST: /usr/lib/inet/pppoec [-os#] [-v] <dev>
[<service> [<server> [only]]]
2008/03/04 07:58:13EST: or
2008/03/04 07:58:13EST: /usr/lib/inet/pppoec [-o#] [-v] -i <dev>

If you specify a device name here, but previously failed to configure
the Ethernet interface correctly, you should get output that looks
like this instead:

2008/03/04 07:59:20EST: /usr/lib/inet/pppoec: PPPTUN_SCTL rge0:pppoed: No such
process

However, if you ran it with the right device name and it was
configured properly, and all the pppoec command did as a result was
"hang" for 3 seconds and then exit without producing output, then that
means there's no PPPoE server available on that interface, or the
server is not responding to standard PPPoE discovery messages.

A snoop trace might help ferret out the problem, but it sounds like
there's either no connection or no server.

Are you sure your provider wants you to run PPPoE, and that you need
to run it?

Is there any chance that you're in Brazil and are suffering with the
local telco that uses the non-standard 3COM boxes with Ethertypes
3C12/3C13 for PPPoE? If so, then you may be out of luck in doing
this. You'll need to get an external box that understands how to deal
with this (a "router" or "firewall"), or contribute a fix for CR
4695172 via OpenSolaris, or (if you're on S10 or older with a service
contract) talk to your local Sun representative. (Or find a better
provider, I guess.)
