No updates are available for Solaris Express. The update manager is there for testing purposes only. This is because Solaris Express is a test build of what will eventually become the next version of Solaris (which make be called "Solaris 11"). Sun don't therefore release any updates to it.
If you want to update your Solaris Express system you need to download the new version then do an "upgrade" by booting from the CD/DVD. Update Manager does work as intended on released versions of Solaris - currently version 8, 9 and 10. Cheers Andrew.
