I too never got wpi0 to work stably but on a T61p in any mode, wep, wpa, or neither the two. It'll connect and work for a bit, then either it'll drop the connection over and over or the data rate will be all over the place down to a few bytes a second even when the laptop is a few feet away from the access point. In any case, it's unstable and unusable.
I was never sure where to file bugs; so I just posted to "bugs" forum in hopes that someone from Sun would file the bug and get it fixed at some point. From the responses, it seems that other people have seen the same behavior.
