Yesterday I have buyed a magazine, where on one DVD is OpenSUSE 11 and one DVD is a XXL version of OpenSolaris: http://www.heise.de/kiosk/special/ct/08/05/ I have not installed OpenSolaris, but have started it as Live-DVD (yes it is a DVD. From Software-side it is the normal CD with a lot of additional software, stands in the magazine). The problem: The LiveDVD starts on my computer only in 640x480 mode with 50Hz and I can not change the mode. OpenSUSE on the other side, starts direct in an higher mode like 1024x768. WinXP says about my graphic card: NVIDIA GeForce 6600 Ort: PCI-Bus 1, Gerät 0, Funktion 0 And the OpenSolaris Live System which describes itself as "OpenSolaris 2008.05 snv_86_rc3 X86" says about my ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thats is one of the problems of OpenSolaris in comparison to Linux: It have not so much driver. And the driver which works, don't run all perfect. It seems also, that Solaris starts in 32bit mode and don't recognized, that the computer is a 64 bit computer. The other problem of OpenSolaris is, that it is in my eyes not really an OpenSource system, because OpenSolaris can until the current time, not be compiled with the GCC and the compilers with which it is compiled, are not OpenSource. And OpenSource Operating Systems, which can only be created with ClosedSource programs, are in my eyed not reallly completly OpenSource systems.
