Try:
     /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -verbose 5 -logverbose 5

control-alt-backspace should get you out of the Xorg server.

Then check the log file at /var/log/Xorg.0.log
I actually done that today; not with the opensolaris live-cd
but an installed SXCE. A sample Xorg log file with nvidia
verbose logging can be found here:

        http://mail.opensolaris.org/pipermail/xwin-discuss/2008-July/003333.html

The monitor's EDID data can be found between the lines
marked "--- EDID for" and "--- End of EDID for".

Btw. during that xwin-discuss thread I learned that the
"NVIDIA X Server Settings" GUI tool does know more
resolutions which can be selected in the "X Server Display
Configuration" tab. It's the "Auto" resolution setting that
is limiting resolution to 1024x768 on my Iiyama AU4831D
panel - apparently do to buggy EDID data sent by the panel.
