I built it using Sun Studio Express... so I didn't have to build atlas/blas as SS includes it as perflib. The only bad issue I had was the studio express build I was using was not very stable. On a couple of files the compiler would die with an assertion failure, but without optimization flags it compiled them. So it was a bit of hand tweaking. AFAIK, SS12 works fine.
