Something important here is RAM quality. RAM may be bad but RAM may even be OK in different main boards but failt for you. I am often e.g. asked: why does this machine run Linux but fails with Solaris? The reason in this case is: The RAM at the upper physical addresses is bad. Linux rarely uses RAM on the upper physical addresses, Solaris uses this RAM for DMA. The SchilliX OpenSolaris distro comes with memtest-x86. ftp://ftp.berlios.de/pub/schillix/ Run memtest-x86 at least for a complete cycle (which lasts between 45 minutes and ~ 3 hours).
