That's completely the opposite! Or are you only talking about closed-src binary-only drivers like from Nvidia? You make me wonder. Where did you get your information from? The only thing which is true is, that the Xorg version which ships with OpenSolaris (including the pre-pciaccess era based drivers) used to lag behind a bit, in 2008 (for good reasons), namely server 1.2 (Xorg 7.2), rather than server 1.5.3 (now!) and even 1.6 (in development in a special fox-gate). Alan Coopersmith and his team from the FullyOpenX OpenSolaris.org project have changed this now!! :-)) So your statement is not by any means valid. The other picky part is support for DRI/DRM, which is always up-to-date for Linux ( http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xorg/ ), while the OpenSolaris port also used to be late, whereas Sun is already working on it, and I myself also invested a few days into it, so if there would be more interest we could discuss about the problems I came across, before I suspended it due to a poor effort vs. benefit ratio. But Sun is already working on it, so why should we bother. But all this is not AMD-Ati's fault. The reason is simply, that not enough opensrc developers are interested in working on the DRI/DRM OpenSolaris port. Ati uses to release more specs via their website's development channels, than _any_ other gfx manufacturer I am aware of. The only asset which is missing here are some more enthusiasts who donate their time and volunteer on it.
