According to your summary, Solaris distinguishes between O/R, and Linux distinguishes between D/S. I think both those distinctions are useful: both knowing what is actually running vs what is runnable, and knowing what is sleeping uninterruptibly (Solaris still does that for disk or for NFS with hard but not intr, right?). OTOH, the meaning of W is different, and X is peculiar to Linux.
On Solaris, it looks like the values are 1:1 with different values of pr_stat (although you didn't mention an idle state).
