What makes you think a company would necessarily _have_ a policy on something like that? Absent such a policy, why should any employee risk their job by presuming to speak for anyone but themselves? If the policy exists, the _most_ you can hope for is that one of them will know it, and repeat it. Plenty of folks aren't employees, either. I don't _think_ Sun currently sells any non-64-bit-capable systems on which they support Solaris, although I'm not positive. I don't know whether or not they sell support contracts for running current Solaris on non-64-bit-capable systems they don't sell, or don't sell anymore. If they don't do either of those things, I would expect patches to make Solaris more reliable on non-64-bit-capable systems to mostly come from outside of Sun, except insofar as very very specific problems are fixed when they're identified (like specific instances of non-atomic operations). So even if I didn't want to submit _patches_, if I wanted Solaris on such systems to be improved, I'd try to identify as many such specific instances of problems myself, and submit those as bugs, so that somebody else could perhaps do the code more quickly. OTOH, since a 32-bit version of Solaris is offered, it _would_ be nice if it were as reliable as the 64-bit version (on otherwise comparable hardware). But the mere fact it's offered doesn't imply that the resources exist to perfect it (without outside help). So I'm not sure whether or not there's an unreasonable inconsistency there. Then again, since all my hardware that can run current 32-bit [Open]Solaris is capable of running 64-bit as well, I don't really have a reason to feel strongly one way or the other. ( 2 UltraSPARC >= II systems, one 64-bit-capable Intel Mac) Just my opinion. I don't work for Sun either. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list opensolaris-discuss@opensolaris.org
