I am neither patronizing nor insulting. I am just bit more involved in these matters than other users. I am sorry if anybody feels that way. Whatever i have done is just to make it understand.
But, I still can not get your points. I don't do anything with system directories and application directories. Instead, i even suggest a functionality like following: 1. Different folder images for system directories, application directories and user directories to easily identify and communicating this to the user and not to mix these directories. Even if you want, make all the system directories as read only. The point is system should be as much neutral as possible regarding where to create directories and files on the available partitions. I will give some metaphors to make it clear if needed. In our house(similar is earth. we don't live in amazon forests or ocean unless it is must), we use the bedroom , kitchen and restroom for its intended purposes unless the person is child. Thing is everybody knows the purpose of each portion of house. we have to just do that. 2. garbage depends on the person using the system. 3. I found that none of the directories are modifiable. Sorry no CUI for whatever reason you call it. I know the vast power of unix commands. The simple thing need is making them(most of them/as much as possible) take the form of GUI that are easy to understand to a literate(and computer novice). The information we provide on the such GUI should be accurate, brief and complete. I have encountered one real life incident. I will just tell you to make it clear for you why cui is most of the times is not the option. I went to take theoretical driving test to tranportation dept. I am surprised that the test is computer based. Then i thought it would be on windows. To my utter dismay, computer is installed with red hat linux. Even more shocking is that it is purely GUI based(I thought it will be CUI based test). But, the thing is the person handling this test is not computer literate. What he knows is how to start and stop the system, his username and password. He knows that there is a shortcut/image to click. Then press enter to run the test. There usual buttons for next, help, close, minimize and maximize. These are the things that he knows I am sure of that. He does not even know neither about the expansion of LINUX/UNICS(X) nor about the file system navigation commands. It is very bad to expect such basic(normal, advanced. but not admin) user to expec t a)to know about changing file permissions using cui rather than gui. Infact i tried changing perms using gui. it does not allow i know that well before. CUI and commands is the number one reason for making all unix variants least used. b) to create shell file to invoke program(s). I know that we have to learn shell to invoke some complex applications. you know that windows installed apps place their shortcuts on start menu, desk top and quick launch at the min. I can create directories and files wherever i want(of course no sane person will touch sys dirs unless he is fully aware of what he is doing.) under any drive/partition. Windows at most will make the windows installation dir as read only. OS can not control the installed non-operating system(user) applications except their behaviour at run time. you can not expect the non computer guys to go thru the command line. These things will become clear once we acquainted with the way non computer guys work with their computers. I already asked in this thread what happens when i stored data in home dir and over time the partition is full. Other partitions are having space. user is not having any write permission in any directory except his home dir. -- This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-discuss mailing list [email protected]
