We all know from experience now that volume is key (critical mass), and
especially at the low end server spectrum (X86) these days, if it is to be
adopted widely. Now if Oracle brings Opensolaris to the Enterprise, at the same
level it took/takes unbreakable Linux, then it'd be a serious contender in SMB.
I would have no problem proposing OpenSolaris based solutions. Now the less fun
part, as much as you guys work very hard to make a desktop and all, some do not
care much about it, it is unfortunate but a fact. JeOS is good start, and to
be installable on hardware directly, not only a VM, or whatever else (zone).
Something you build on, the smaller the better, think embedded, as you like. I
know the value of Solaris on servers and hope to see the same about
Opensolaris. I'll keep watching, reading, installing and testing, for the time
being.
Oracle does not seem to be itself interested in selling volume x64
machines direct to customers. Instead, it is going for the customized
integrated stack solutions or (very) large bundles. The watchword is
"Solutions" not "Volume". That said, Oracle will still sell individual
machines to its partners, which can then resell them to End Users, but
it looks like the days of buying a couple of x64 machines direct are gone.
Go read my post of a couple of days ago about where Solaris and
OpenSolaris are going.
Oracle appears to be ending (i.e. not renewing) even paid-for support of
OpenSolaris (though this may change). Solaris 10 (and, at the
appropriate time, Solaris Next) are where the paid OS support will be.
OpenSolaris and Solaris have a similar (but not identical) relationship
as that of Fedora and RHEL.
Note that all of what I've said is Public information, and I have no
super-secret knowledge of the inner workings of Larry's brain.
And, I of course do not speak for Oracle America, Inc. in any capacity.
