Unless you're running Thunderbird on Windows, it's very unlikely to be a virus. Sounds more like Thunderbird's local mail cache or index for one particular profile has become corrupt.
You can rebuild a folder's index using the "Rebuild Index" button in the folder's Properties dialog (right-click the folder). You could also try Compacting folders, to see if that helps.
If that doesn't help, and if all your mail is on IMAP, and if you have no (or few) client-side mail filters, you might find it easier just to delete the profile and re-create it.
